Overview of This Activity
With the rise of IoT technologies, there has been a notable transformation in the landscape of data collection for SCADA systems. While traditional SCADA setups have been anchored to wired connections, they sometimes fall short in terms of accessibility and reach. This is where LoRaWAN® comes into play. It’s a long-range, low-power wireless communication technology designed specifically for IoT devices. The distinct advantage of LoRaWAN® is its capability to gather data from distant or challenging locations without the need for extensive wired infrastructure.
In this activity, we’ll guide you through the steps to successfully integrate a LoRaWAN® sensor with a SCADA system. We’ll consider scenarios like monitoring environmental parameters in expansive agricultural fields or tracking water levels in remote reservoirs. In these situations, a wired connection might not be feasible or efficient. By the end of this activity, you will have hands-on experience bridging the gap between LoRaWAN® sensors and SCADA systems, bringing forth a practical solution to real-world challenges.
To sum it up, data from the LoRaWAN® sensor will be directly transmitted to a SCADA server via TCP. You can then access, visualize, and interpret this data through the SCADA web interface. Moreover, for this integration, we’ll be utilizing Rapid SCADA, a free and practical product, ensuring this hands-on exercise is both educational and cost-effective.
